Venture to the town of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada’s only sub-Arctic seaport. Bundle up and board the tundra buggy. Then take in one of the rarest of wildlife wonders: polar bears migrating to Hudson Bay for their annual feast. Snap a photo as they stand on their hind legs and peer inside the window of your buggy, or play-fight in the snow below. Make sure the camera batteries are fully charged—during high season, you could see dozens of bears in a single day.
Afterward, explore more of the rugged Hudson Bay coastline. Keep the binoculars at ready. Chances are you’ll encounter a caribou, Arctic fox, wolf, Arctic hare, lemming, snowy owl or gyrfalcon. Cap your afternoon off by enjoying a spectacular sunset.
Back in town, head over to the Gypsy’s Restaurant & Bakery for its famous food and lively conversation. Order the roasted caribou, poached Arctic char or Manitoba pickerel. Kick back and swap polar bear stories with the locals. End your meal with one of Gypsy’s delightfully over-the-top pastries. Then step outside for some after-dinner entertainment—is that the Northern Lights or the midnight sun?
