Prince Edward Island

Meet Anne of Green Gables, “tong” and shuck oysters, head to the beach, see cruise ships docked in Charlottetown.

Ever taste seaweed pie? You might at Peake’s Quay in Charlottetown, where the seafood comes straight from boat to plate. Take your ice-cream cone with you on a stroll of the Historic Charlottetown Waterfront to Founders’ Hall. Then turn back the pages of history in the Time Travel Tunnel, which documents the birth of Canada. Chat in person with the “Fathers and Ladies of Confederation”—their lavish period costumes include porkpie hats and hoop skirts.

More than 100 years ago, author Lucy Maud Montgomery breathed life into the fictional character Anne of Green Gables. Anne still lives on today—her millions of fans will find her on a horse-drawn carriage ride around the Lake of Shining Waters, on a walk through Lover’s Lane, at the Avonlea Village theme park and at Green Gables Heritage Place. The Lucy Maude Montgomery Heritage Museum in Park Corner houses antiques and items recognizable from the many beloved “Anne” books.

When it’s time to unwind, plunk down anywhere on PEI’s legendary red, pink and champagne-gold sand beaches. Listen for the squeaks and whistles of the “singing sands” at beautiful Basin Head beach. Visit a fisherman’s wharf and working lighthouse at Victoria-by-the-Sea, an artists’ enclave, then catch a performance at PEI’s “longest running little theatre,” the Victoria Playhouse. Hear some of the world’s best classical, opera, jazz and Celtic music all summer long in St Mary’s Church at the Indian River Festival. And feast until you can’t eat another bite at the PEI International Shellfish Festival.

Anne. Singing. Mussels.
